Gadzooks! I really want to rant about my seething hatred for the frozen-faced, scrawny, sexless, speech impaired actress Nicole Kidman, but um... dang.. where is the camera?!
I crocheted some cute thread crochet Cubs logos. Go Cubs! But I have to deal with my camera first.
Seriously, I really hate NK and her ex-husband is no better. She's probably sort of a nice person, but she's ruined every movie she's beeen in (except "To Die For", "Dead Calm" and "Flirting". I liked those from long ago) I've hated Tom Cruise since Risky Business...
These are the things I obsess over when I'm alone in the house. I just accidentally watched "The Invasion" and it was already terrible before they cast Ms. Kidman in the lead role. How does that woman have an Oscar? Her way of acting distressed is to cover her eyes with her bangs since the expression doesn't register on her face anywhere. She is the same age as I am and I don't really have any wrinkles so what is her problem?
So I've ranted anyway... Anyone else have inexplicably popular actors or actresses they avoid watching like the plague?

Yes!! I TOTALLY agree with you, Susie! I can't stand Nicole Kidman either! Or Tom Cruise for that matter! Ha, I'm not alone! ;-)
I totally agree!
I am also not a fan of Julia Roberts I avoid all her movies. I can not stand how she cries and her tears stay on her lips it so bothers me.

I knew I wasn't the only one! Rebekah- I also hate Julia Roberts! Fortunately, we never see her in the movies anymore. She is too busy being friends with Oprah. I like Tom Cruise when he is cast as a cocky, self-absorbed a--hole because then I think he seems perfect for the part. I also hold an intense dislike for Michael Douglas, especially now that he is not aging gracefully since he looks permanently surprised from his bad eyebrow lift.
I can't really place my finger on why, but I don't really care much for Audrey Hepburn, but I don't get squirmy irritations over her.
My husband HATES NK too. We both think her plastic surgery is horrid. And her chiclet teeth were replace by those big ol' veneers. Why do they do that??? Had to laugh reading this. There are many actors/actresses I can't stand, but I can't think of any right this second...dang! :)
I thought Nicole Kidman was much prettier with some meat on her bones, her curly locks, red hair, and a face that showed expression. I can't imagine being in the Hollywood environment and how messed up that kind of scrutiny over your looks can make one's self image. I liked her in "Malice" (I think she does wicked well) and I liked her in "Cold Mountain".
Never have been much of a Cruise fan, tho "The Last Samurai" is my favorite of his movies (stellar supporting cast).
Don't care for Michael Douglas, but sure love his dad!!
There was a Julia Robert oversaturation there for a while, but it's cool that she's retreated from movies a bit to be mom. I liked her in "Mystic Pizza", but my favorite role of hers was in "Closer" -- a very adult role for her, which she was duefer.
I'll skip anything that has Keanu Reeves in it - to me, he always comes across so stilted and unnatural (now, I haven't seen any of the Matrix movies, so maybe he's good in those -- but I haven't seen them BECAUSE he's in them, so . . .).
To flip from the negative to the positive, what about actors or actresses whom you like so much that you'll watch (or attempt to watch LOL) anything they're in? For me, Holly Hunter, Richard Dreyfus, Gena Rowlands, Sandra Bullock, Will Smith, Clooney, Pitt, Drew Barrymore . . . this is actually a list that can get quite long so I'll stop there!!
I use to despise Nicole Kidman, but after Tom Cruise's horrific and crazy spouting for his beloved "religion" scientology & his appearance on Oprah jumping on the couch and yelling. It just opened my eyes to what Nicole had to put w/ when she was married to him. TC is a nut and has devoted his life to a "religion" that is based on a science-fiction novel, that's just crazy!!
Another actor I despise is Kevin Bacon, I can't explain this other than when I see him I just get annoyed and have to change the channel or turn the tv off!
You are not alone in your feelings about Kidman. I can't stand anything about her. Whenever I come across an interview with her it just comes across as so phoney. She's trying to hard to stay young. And her career seems to be her top priority. I can't believe she went back to work so soon after having a child after all her ranting about wanting one.
Lana, Tom Cruise & Scientology gave NK her career. She certainly enjoyed the lifestyle it afforded her. She tried to get Cruise to reconsider, remember? Now she's letting her kids rot in it while she's off on film sets around the world.
I love how comments come out of the woodwork when I start hating on celebrities!
Ianna- I really try not to dislike celebrities for their personal lives and their politics because that all gets so complicated and I like the movies of Sean Penn, Woody Allen, John Travolta's early years. Even that french actress who said those terrible things about 9/11 was great in that Sylvia Plath movie. Heck, I even like Jennifer Lopez in films, but I can't stand her interviews and she seems absurdly self-absorbed. Scientology is pretty nuts to me too, but what can I say, Isaac Hayes was a genius.
Glenda- I like all of your positives and many more. There are only just a few actors that I really dislike. I love Mystic Pizza because not only is it a good little film, but co-star, Lily Taylor, was in my homeroom in High School. I can't quite explain it, but I've liked Keanu Reeves since Point Break when he made me feel like taking up surfing...
I dislike Matthew McConaughey instead. He's too much of a naked stoner for my taste.
One actor who makes my skin crawl is Bill Murray. I don't know why -- he just gets on my nerves. My husband thinks he's hysterical. I will have to get over my distaste for him when City of Ember is released.
Nicole Kidman is not my favorite actress, but I don't hate her. I loved her in Cold Mountain. Personally I think her new hubby is a cutie.
Even though Tom Cruise has absolutely gone off the deep end, I still like some of his older stuff. My favorite movies of his are Risky Business, Top Gun, Cocktail and Rain Man. I've not cared for him much in later years.
Michael Douglas was totally hot in The American President, IMHO. You gotta give him that one.
I just love to hear Matthew McConaughey speak. I don't need to see him or watch his movies. That southern drawl makes me melt.
I will watch anything with Morgan Freeman, Meryl Streep, John Travolta (even though he's also gone a bit wacko), Jack Nicholson, Sally Field, Nicolas Cage or Robin Williams. (Boy, am I dating myself!) For the younger actors, I will watch anything with Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon or Mark Ruffalo. Like Susie, the list could grow quite large, so I will stop, too.
The thing that bugged me about Cold Mountain is that that didn't look or feel anything at all like the American South. I don't think I watched the whole thing. I kept missing it when it was on HBO.
Ooh I do like Mark Ruffalo too, and I really love Kate Winslet. Does she still count as "younger"? Meryl Streep is really my hero since she was so much fun in "Mamma Mia".
I'm such a geek. I really should research my posts better. I blame my migraine. That French actress (Marion Cotillard) played Édith Piaf, not Sylvia Plath (see my comment above).
I agree about NK, I'm no great fan of JR either.
I usually go for interesting stories and such first, the which means the movies these ones are in don't generally meet the mark, so it isn't hard avoiding them.
There aren't many actors I don't think I just can't stand because I love movies so much but lately Nicholas Cage has gotten on my nerves. I used to love him (Raising Arizona) but I just rented Adaptation and realized I don't really like him anymore. Mel Gibson has kind of gotten to me that way as well. There used to be a day when one of his movies came out and there was no way I wasn't going to see it. Maybe we just see too much of these people for them to be interesting anymore.
