Computers and Robots

I don't know what happened, but our desktop computer failed the other day and is completely unsalvageable. Be sure that you have your files backed up somewhere! We did backup. Unfortunately the last time was in 2007, so we have a year's worth of photos and all our music files lost on that faulty motherboard. Alas.. We now have to purchase a new computer when we've been saving up for other important large purchases.

We have this horrible little laptop which is something, I suppose...

In any case, I like to post big colorful pictures, so I went back into my Flickr archive and found this felt robot project I made.
Felt Robot

That old camera I used back then was so unreliable! It bugs me that these pics are not quite focused.

I actually made several of these and gave a few out as gifts and shared them in a swap:

The pattern was from THIS book. I was able to assemble some of the parts with the sewing machine, but the details are handstitched.

Wish us luck on our thrifty-but-powerful computer quest. We are not particularly excited about it.

Ohhhhhh, I'm so sorry about your computer :( -- my PC did that a couple years ago, with no advance notice that it might be a good idea to back up my files asap. Fortunately, I upload photos to snapfish every couple months, so I only lost a month or two of photos at that time. "Backup computer" has been on my to-do list since last week -- now I just need to DO IT already!

Cute robots, by the way.

Sorry to hear about your machine -- what a drag. At least computers seem to get cheaper all the time; I hope your search pans out. Meanwhile, I like the new look of SCS -- new green masthead with flowers. It seems to say, "Think spring!" ...defying the winter storm warning currently in effect.

When my computer died last year i took the harddrive out put it in a harddrive case and plugged that into my sons computer. Wonder over wonder everything was still there, except the stuff I worked on when the thing died. It is worth a try to get your photos back.

The Geek Squad tried to do all that when I took it in. The files are still recoverable, but it has to be sent out because I guess our problem requires special technology. We are going to look into a local data recovery place and see if it will be cheaper. It may only be a few months worth of photos because I have some things uploaded to Shutterfly. We decided to get a replacement computer first and worry about the files later. It's all the music files as well... Aargh!

Thanks for noticing the banner, Julie. I uploaded it right before the crash and now that I'm using this laptop, I see that it doesn't go all the way across the top of this wider monitor. Oh well..

Lovely new banner Susie. I'm sorry to hear about your computer hope you manage to recover your files somehow. It's a pain when that happens, I used to make back up copies every week but then stopped, after reading your post I made a copy of everything to an external drive just in case...

I have a question about the robots (and other softies): do you really cram in the stuffing or just gently fill? The few I've made wind up puckered/dimpled around the seams and I'm wondering if I'm not putting in enough Polyfil. Any thoughts?

Lisa- I can't email you, so I hope you'll check back for my answer. Felt critters aren't like amigurumi. I don't usually stuff the heck out of them, I just stuff enough to get good, even dimension, but not so much that the stitches get distorted. I think for these robots, I did stuff the heads a lot so they would look rounder. You might try making smaller stitches if you want a really puffed, stuffed look.

Oops! Lisa-- that comment from Tom above is actually from me, Susie. Just another complication from our computer failure...

Thanks for the advice. My daughter wants some friends for the little penguin I made her, so I'll try smaller stitches on my next effort. I'm usually so anxious to finish and see the end result that I'm probably not spending enough time on the sewing.
